We had a private 2-day tour including the visit to Laguna Colorada and the salt flats in July. For travelers with limited time like us, this tailored private 2-day tour... read more met all our needs and my husband and I were both very happy.
The tour was fantastic, luckily we saw everything as expected, including the red lake (non-frozen), flamingos (still plenty of them), giant cactus, the salt flats during daytime and sunset (water zone). The guide, Marbel, and the driver, Diego, were very professional, not only their abundant knowledge but also very good driving skills. The food was great, we enjoyed every meal, especially our first-day lunch by the lakefront viewpoint with flamingos, and our second-day lunch on the salt flats.
Pros and cons for this tour:
Pros:
(1) Paul from Got Salt Bolivia is the only one who replied my email about the 2-day private tour inquiry. Although the price is high (US$ 1,200 plus US$ 60 PayPal transaction fees), we still paid for it because it's very difficult to find other tour agencies in Uyuni area for such tour. (it looks the minimum/standard length for the tour to Laguna Colorada is at least a 3-day tour)
(2) On the first day, we departed at 8:00am and arrived the lodge at around 5:00pm; on the second day, we departed at 6:00am and returned to Uyuni hotel after sunset. The time schedule and route were well planned. I sincerely recommend that tour agencies can promote this 2-day tour itinerary because short-term travelers can have the chance see so many different spectacular views within such a short amount of time.
(3) Our guide, Marbel, took a lot of fun pictures for us on the salt flats. Those photos and videos were definitely the best souvenirs for our Uyuni trip. Thank you, Marbel!
(4) Our driver, Diego, drives very carefully and safely, and his music collection is great! On our trip to Laguna Colorada, it literally has no "road" but just dusts and sands, but we felt very safe and comfortable all the time.
Cons:
(1) Paul offered complimentary transfers from/to the airport, which was thoughtful but we got some little surprises. Our flight was scheduled to arrive UYU on July 18, however on June 18 I received a message from Paul asking if we're in the airport, because he booked our tour one month ahead. Which made me very nervous and worried for the entire month, because I was so afraid that we couldn't be able to have the tour as scheduled, especially when I already paid in full several months ago. Thankfully Paul showed up in UYU airport on July 18 so we can finally relieved.
(2) After the fantastic 2-day tour, on our departure day to the airport on July 21, we were waiting in the hotel at 6:50am (as confirmed with Paul the day earlier) but no one showed up. We called Paul and surprisingly found out his car was frozen and couldn't start, and no one would be sent to pick us up. In the end, it was our hotel that helped us to call a taxi to the airport (we were the last 2 passengers to check in on that flight). We were a bit frustrated, because if the hotel staff didn't remind us to call Paul, we'd be waiting in the lobby till we missed our flight. It's not about the free ride, it's about whether we could get to the airport on time. What I learnt from this experience is "always have a plan B if Plan A fails you".
Overall, the 2-day tour itself is worth every penny, especially we were lucky enough to have a very good weather condition in this wintertime. The only thing that needs improvement would be the communication part, we'd need to re-confirm again and again to make sure our tour is on schedule.
